Digitimes report that AMD will launch new Fusion based laptop and desktop computer processors during the third quarter of this year. AMD already has 3 Fusion based APUs (Accelerated Processing Units) on the market – the C-30, C-50 Ontario and E-350 Zacate processors. These are designed for netbooks and ultraportable notebooks and have a low power draw. And because they come bundled with powerful AMD Radeon graphics, they can handle HD video without breaking a sweat.

AMD’s Fusion platform combines processor and graphics cores onto a single chip. This architecture helps conserve energy. Digitimes report that the new processors will belong to the AMD E-series. of these the AMD E-300 and E-450 Zacate processors are designed for mainstream laptops. They have a power draw of just 18W. The top-of-the-line E2-3250 chip will have a TDP of 65W. It is possible that it is designed for desktop computers.

The HP Pavilion dm1z is an ultraportable notebook with an 11.6 inch display. It is powered by a 1.6GHz AMD E-350 dual core Zacate processor having a total power draw of 18W.

The AMD Zacate processor is highly power efficient. It doesn’t consume significantly more power than a dual core Intel Atom processor. What’s more it delivers better performance and comes bundled with powerful AMD Radeon HD 6310 graphics capable of handling 1080p HD video playback and moderate 3D gaming.

The Pavilion dm1z isn’t much larger than a typical netbook. It isn’t very costly either. The notebook looks like a larger version of the HP Mini 210. The 11.6 inch display has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.

The Pavilion dm1z comes standard with a 6-cell battery and gets around 9.5 hours of battery life when the WiFi is turned off. The $449 base configuration has a 250GB hard drive, a 2GB of RAM and WiFi 802.11b/g/n. Higher-end configurations are also possible.

Sony has finally introduced its Vaio S ultraportable notebook in the US. The 13.3 inch Sony VAIO S will be configurable with Intel’s latest Sandy Bridge Core i5 and i7 processors and AMD Radeon HD 6630 graphics with 1GB of video RAM. Unfortunately the laptop doesn’t support any automatic graphics switching technology which means that you will have to manually switch between the integrated and discrete graphics options.

Other specifications include Blu-ray, optional SSD options, a backlit keyboard and a unique extended battery option worth $150. Sony says that the extended battery will provide a total of 15 hours of battery life when it is latched on to the bottom of the laptop as it is capable of charging the primary integrated battery. The extended battery comes with its own AC adapter so it can be charged separately from the laptop.

Pricing and availability
The Sony VAIO S with an Intel Core i5-2410 processor and AMD Radeon HD 6630 graphics and a 320GB hard drive is priced at $979. It will be up for pre-order starting today.
