The Toshiba NB550D with AMD’s dual core Ontario processor has started shipping in parts of Europe and Australia. It is still not yet available in the US.

The Toshiba NB550D is a 10.1 inch netbook. It has a 1GHz dual core AMD C-50 processor which comes bundled with the Radeon HD 6250 graphics. The AMD Ontario processors consume just 9W of power. They are in fact as power efficient as the Intel Atom processors. And because the Ontario processors come with the Radeon graphics, they will deliver great graphics performance. The Radeon HD 6250 supports DirectX 11 and can handle 1080p HD video playback.

The folks at PC Authority who got to spend some time the netbook says that it is very responsive. The netbook, however, takes a little longer than some Atom-based netbooks to launch some applications.

Sony is not known for building low-cost laptops. Even the company’s VAIO W netbooks are far more expensive than their competitors sporting similar hardware. And now Sony is back with yet another machine worth the premium.

The company has just announced a limited edition VAIO W netbook. The netbook is designed by Sony in partnership with Billabong and its biggest selling point is the Imperial Lime lid.

The Sony Vaio W Limited Edition netbooks are expected to start shipping in Australia next month. The machines are powered by a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N450 processor with 2GB of RAM, and a 250GB hard drive. They sport a 10.1 inch display with 1366 x 768 pixels. Other features include Ethernet jack, 2 USB 2.0 ports and integrated webcam. And the price? Well, it starts at AU$749 ($619).
