E Ink Holdings has officially announced its first color electronic paper display called E Ink Triton. The new Triton displays will offer 20 percent faster performance, sunlight readable imaging and up to a month’s battery life which means that it will offer the same endurance levels as E Ink’s monochromatic screens found in ebook readers like Amazon’s Kindle.

Meanwhile Chinese PC maker Hanvon has announced that it will be the first to bring the new color E Ink panels to the market.

The Entourage Pocket Edge is now available from the Home Shopping Network. The dualscreen tablet / e-reader weighs 1.35pounds.

The Pocket Edge is a smaller version of the original eDGe tablet introduced late last year. While the original model had a 9.7 inch E Ink display and a 10.1 inch color LCD display, the Pocket Edge has a 6-inch e-ink panel and a 7 inch LCD. The Pocket Edge seems to have the same basic specifications as the bigger model including a low power Marvell processor and a resistive touchscreen display.

A few features, however, appear to have changed. The trackball on the right edge,for example, has now been replaced with an optical touchpad. Spec-wise, the tablet has 4GB of storage, a 2 megapixel camera, WiFi 802.11b/g, a USB port and a micro-SD slot. While the specifications aren’t all that impressive, the Pocket Edge has an attractive price tag. Originally priced at $499, it is now on sale at HSN for $399.

There is still no word on that 3G model which was said to be coming to Verizon.

The ViewSonic MB-P702 is a cross between a tablet and an ebook reader. It has got a 7 inch touchscreen LCD display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. The device can function as both a movie player and an ebook reader. As an ebook reader, it can read PDF, TXT, EPUB and others. It also possesses handwritten notation capabilities. The supported video formats include MKV, AVI, WMV, MPG, MP4, and RMVB. The MB-P702 also has an HDMI port and supports 1080p HD video playback.

Asus has officially unveiled a digital note taking device called Eee Tablet. The machine features a backlight-less TFT-LCD touchscreen with 2,450 dpi input sensitivity and 64-levels of grey. Asus claims that its Eee Tablet is one of the world’s most accurate and sensitive note taking devices available today.

The Eee Tablet offers a lot more functionality than an e-reader. It is also an excellent note-taking device with built-in notepad templates. Better still, the machine can store, sort, tag, and annotate your notes on the fly.

The Eee Tablet features a MicroSD slot and a 2 megapixel camera with which students can take snaps of lecture slides. They can then annotate and sync these lectures back to a PC over USB. Asus claims that the device will get around 10 hours of run time.

Pricing and availability
The Eee Tablet is expected to cost between $199 and $299. It should hit the streets in September.

ViewSonic has released not one but two eBook readers. The ViewSonic VEB620 and VEB625 each have a 6-inch E-Ink display and plain looks. Other features include 2GB of onboard storage and an accelerometer for automatic page rotation. There is also an SD card slot for storage expansion.

While the VEB620 has a regular display, the VEB625 has a touchscreen display and WiFi connectivity too. Both readers are compatible with PDF, ePub, RTF and plain text. And at .24kg they are lighter than the latest model  of Kindle.

While running on battery power, the VEB620 should last for 8,000 page turns. The VEB625 will get less battery life (6,200 page turns). Both models are already on sale in Europe. The VEB620 is priced at £175 ($269) plus tax whereas the VEB625 goes for £205 ($315) plus tax.
