MSI Introduces the the GT783 and the GT783R

MSI has announced two new laptops that target the gaming community: the GT783 and the GT783R. The two laptops have almost identical specs, and MSI promises that either one is capable of running all of the new PC gaming titles on the market, including the very popular Skyrim.

It takes a lot to please a dedicated PC gamer when it comes to a laptop. Your machine has to be powerful enough to process gaming software at a solid frame rate. Your GPU has to be capable of excellent graphical performance, and your monitor had better be full HD. Lags are also unacceptable, so RAM is essential. MSI has all those areas covered. If you’re a serious mobile gamer, then MSI is the place to turn to.

While very similar, there are some differences of note in the pair of laptops. The GT783 boasts 16GB of Ram, 128GB SSD, and a 750 GB traditional drive. The GT783R, on the other hand, packs 12GB of RAM and a pair of drives that will give you a combined 1.5TB of storage. The rest of the specs are identical:

• 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-2670QM processor
• NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M graphics card
• SteelSeries backlit programmable keyboard
• THX Studio Pro audio

The GT783R comes in at $2299 while the GT783 is a fraction more expensive at $2499. The GT783 will come with a bundle that includes Battlefield 3. A SteelSeries headset along with a mouse and mouse pad complete the GT783 bundle.

These days it is just as hard to pick a gaming laptop as it is to select a quotidian one. Whether you go the Alienware route or with the very fine, but still-unavailable (but that has popped up at the CES) Razer Blade or something a little more traditional, like the Acer Aspire AS8950G-9839, choosing a gaming laptop takes time and dedication.

Do you go for power, or do you go for visual appear? Do you go for sight or for sound? Maybe you’ll go for all of the above. One thing is for sure, it is gamers that are driving the PC world, gamers that ultimately drive the R&D departments of many laptop and desktop computer manufacturers. Remember when it was NASA or the military that set the pace for technological innovation? Now it’s that quiet kid next door that spends hours at his computer playing Warcraft.

Okay, maybe it’s not that simple, but as they say, necessity is the mother of invention. For MSI, the necessity was to provide a powerful gaming laptop at an ‘accessible’ price. With the GT783 and the GT783R, they are a step closer.

MSI has been showing off its Windows 7 tablets for a while. One of these machines – the WindPad 100W which has an Intel Atom Z530 processor – is now up for pre-order from Excaliber PC for $649. Now it looks like there will be yet another model. This tablet will be powered by a low Power AMD processor instead of an Intel processor.

Digitimes reports that this tablet will be called WindPad 110W. MSI is expected to show off the tablet at the CeBIT trade show in Germany next week. It will reportedly have a 10.1 inch display and an AMD C-50 dual core Ontario processor with AMD Radeon graphics.

Sure the AMD C-50 isn’t more powerful than an Intel Atom processor. But because it comes bundled with powerful Radeon graphics it will be able to play 1080p HD video. It also supports DirectX 11. The MSI WindPad 110W also has WiFi, 32GB of storage, an ambient light sensor and G-sensor.

The affected notebooks include select models of Satellite A660 / A 665, L655 and M645 series models. The Satellite E305-S1990, select models of the Toshiba Portege R835 laptops, Qosmio X505 series systems, and the Qosmio X500-Q930 model have also been recalled.

Toshiba has requested customers who bought the laptops to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. The chipset flaw has also affected laptops sold by companies like Acer, HP, Dell, Lenovo and others. However, Toshiba is the first PC maker to officially recalls its products.

In related news MSI and Gigabyte have stopped selling motherboards compatible with the Sandy Bridge processors until Intel offers flawless stock. Meanwhile Intel estimates a $1 billion loss in ‘missed sales and higher costs’ due to the flawed Sandy Bridge chipset.
